How To Repair Pressure Relief Valve On Water Heater

Did you know that a water heater could smash through a firm like a powerful missile? Be sure your h2o heater'south T&P relief valve works!

Steam, if allowed to build in pressure level, is an incredibly powerful force.

In the video below, Jamie and Adam of the popular television show, MythBusters , show just what tin happen when the heat—and resulting pressure—within a water heater surpasses the h2o heater's rated limit.

When they crank-up the oestrus and pressure level, the water heater blasts through the upper floor and roof of a demonstration house and soars hundreds of feet into the sky, leaving behind a demonstration house that's been blown to smithereens.

This is why storage water heater tanks take a unproblematic piffling device called a temperature and force per unit area-relief valve (T&P relief valve) screwed into the top or side of the tank.

If a water heater overheats to a temperature to a higher place 210 degrees F, building pressure inside the tank in excess of 150 psi, this simple petty valve automatically opens and releases the built-up pressure (and water), protecting confronting a disastrous explosion.

Obviously, it'southward important to be sure this valve works properly.

Every bit T&P valves become old, they can begin to drip or leak and may need to be replaced. You can order a h2o heater T&P valve online or buy one at a hardware store or habitation improvement centre.

How to Examination a Water Heater T&P Relief Valve

Periodically test this device past lifting its lever to brand certain it is working. Hot h2o should come out of the discharge pipe. When y'all release the lever, it should snap back down.

Unfortunately, doing this with an old valve can cause it to leak. If it does, y'all'll need to supersede it. So the solution can become the problem. That's why we're showing you how to replace it.

Because the pipes and the water will be very hot, vesture sturdy gloves.

Notation: Be aware that a pressure relief valve is designed so that h2o will pour out of it if force per unit area builds upwardly too high in the water heater. With this in mind, the discharge piping from the valve should be emptied into a bucket or tray, or be piped outdoors or to a drain. It should never be capped!

How to Supersede a Water Heater T&P Relief Valve

Here's how to supersede a h2o heater temperature-force per unit area relief valve:

1 Shut off the common cold water to the water heater and gas or electricity that heats the water heater. Close the shutoff valve on the cold water inlet line that fills the h2o heater.

2 Bleed the water from the tank until the water level is below the valve's location. To do this, connect a garden hose to the water heater's drain valve, open a hot h2o at whatever faucet, shower, or bathtub to relieve the water force per unit area in the system, and then open the drain valve. Call up that the h2o volition be hot!

For a top-mounted valve, drain most 1 gallon. For a side-mounted valve, drain near 10 gallons. And then turn off the drain valve and the faucet.

Circumspection: The water will probably be very hot unless you've allowed time for it to cool!

iii Raise the lever on the valve to release any excess pressure.

four If the valve has a discharge pipe attached to it, unscrew the pipe, turning information technology counterclockwise (as viewed from the pipe).

5 Unscrew the former T&P valve from the water heater after you've unscrewed the discharge pipe from it. Turn it counterclockwise, using a wrench. Annotation: Slide a pipe over the wrench'south handle if you lot need more leverage to break it free. If hot water begins to pour out, screw the valve back in and drain more water from the tank.

vi Wind Teflon® pipe-thread tape on the threads of the new T&P valve, winding counterclockwise. Then screw the new valve into the water heater, turning it clockwise. Tighten it with a wrench, only don't over-tighten.

7 Air current pipe-thread tape onto discharge pipe's threads and screw the discharge pipe into the new valve. Snugly tighten it with a wrench. Brand sure the pressure-release lever on the valve is airtight.

8 Open 1 of your home'southward hot water faucets. Then open up the cold-water shutoff valve to the h2o heater. Put a bucket under the finish of the T&P discharge pipe. When you hear the tank beginning to fill with water, lift the pressure-release lever on the T&P valve and watch water spill through the discharge piping into the saucepan.

When the water from the discharge piping becomes a steady stream, close the T&P pressure-release lever. When hot water streams through the faucet that you opened in your home, plow off that faucet.

Plow the gas or electricity back on and, for a gas water heater, relight the pilot light or restart it with the electronic igniter if necessary. Give the water heater a few minutes to reheat, and and so check the T&P valve once more to make sure information technology is working and non leaking.

If everything is working properly, congratulations! You lot've handled this of import comeback yourself!
